He used to be in Guided by Voices. He writes a lot of songs. He drinks a lot. He needs an editor. Another week another Pollard album. I am not a Pollard or GBV fan boy. Standard Gargoyle Decisions is being described everywhere as a difficult record. But why This isn t exactly avant garde noise people. No matter how all over the place it might sound on a first listen it s just pop music. Every single record even within the Guided by Voices canon is different from the next. You have to find the wavelength of each. Even the most generous of write ups are middling and faint. All this brings up the question of when albums should be reviewed and opinions formed in the first place. We re not necessarily talking about constant spins every day for months on end. But listen to it once then come back to it again later. You re going to find a different and much more enjoyable and engaging record than you remembered. Live blogging is killing our appreciation of a! rt. The world would be a better place if more musicians were more like Pollard I think. Stop thinking so much about the final product the bottom line the promotional cycle the money. Release music when you feel like it. When there s enough for a record. When it s done enough. When it s fun for you to listen to. Stop making such a big deal out of everything and let music just be music. Stop forcing such a round album into such a square hole. A distant pathetic voice whines obnoxiously from across the studio Baaaaaaahb. we need to do it this way Yeah not going to happen. Fuck you and your expectations. Standard Gargoyle Decisions doesn t give a shit about what neutered indie rock buzz you care about this week. If you don t like rock and roll that s your own fucking problem.
